“Manna is the chosen charity of the Perth office of global law firm, K&L Gates, and we are very proud of our long standing relationship with Manna.   We continue to be inspired by the generosity and compassion shown by John and Bev Lowe to the all too many homeless and disadvantaged in Perth.  Since 2011, we have raised funds and volunteered for Manna in various capacities, as well as providing pro bono legal assistance.    It’s an “all of office” commitment with all our staff being involved in some way.

By way of example:

  • We regularly prepare food in the Manna kitchen and serve it to the “streeties” in the park.
  • We hold successful office fundraising events for Manna throughout the year.
  • We sponsor, through our workplace giving program, Manna’s school breakfast program at a local primary school.
  • We collect clothes, blankets and toiletries for use by the “streeties”.
  • One of our staff members serves as the Board secretary of Manna.

Though, for many of our team, the highlight of the past few of years has been volunteering at the senior lunches organised by Manna during our firm’s Global Day of Service. For the senior lunch last year, a large contingent of K&L Gates staff arrived at Manna’s headquarters bright and early to arrange flowers, to set up, to decorate the tables, to prepare, cook and serve the food. It was the perfect team building event – a fantastic opportunity to get to know each other better outside the office environment while contributing to a most worthy cause.  K&L Gates values its close partnership with Manna – it’s a wonderful way to contribute to our community and by doing so we get so much back in return!”

“A big thank you to Nicki and LoLo at Manna for organising a great team building day for us. Starting with a morning helping in the kitchen is quite unique, unlike any other team building exercise I have previously been involved in, and a great opportunity to work alongside and get to know my fellow “chefs”.   The more formal team building exercises in the afternoon certainly got everyone talking and thinking about how they operate and what we can do differently in the future. A great day that passes very quickly.”

“Corporate Volunteering Day

Our staff thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from the Corporate Volunteering Program held at Manna this year.   We were divided into groups and throughout the day prepared and cooked meals for the homeless, created stationary packs for schools, made Manna’s Hedgehog Slice for the schools as well as participated in team building activities to enhance the working team.   Our employees enjoy helping the staff at Manna who are extremely friendly and many start a volunteering journey of their own after they get a feel for what it is like to give back to the homeless community.   That is the effect that Manna has on people, it is such an important charity within our community.

Seniors Lunch

For the past four years we have sponsored and volunteered at Manna’s Spring Senior’s Lunch which has been enjoyed by Atlas staff and clients as well as 150 seniors.   We assist Lolo in the kitchen in preparing the food, decorating the hall, greeting the seniors before serving them a three course lunch.   Listening to their stories is a favourite during the afternoon and volunteers come back to the office telling great stories about some of the senior’s they were talking to. Manna is such a wonderful organisation who make a difference in the lives of many people – the elderly, the homeless, primary school children and also the volunteers who assist them. All of our staff who spend time volunteering with Manna are always so grateful and feel grounded by the experience.”

“I sometimes question ‘team building’ exercises principally because they often have low impact on return to work.  But the Manna team building took team work to a whole new level.   It’s practical focus and rotated activity meant our work was stimulating, relevant and meaningful because we were (in a very small way) helping Manna help those who live in the margins of our society.  In addition to this many of our team members who did not want to go at all ended up saying they thought it was fantastic.   And best of all when we got back to work a few of the blokes who previously didn’t know me (or didn’t want to!!) would say Hi and that’s been great.  Would recommend this to any and all corporates.”

Feedback from Fluor staff with relation to volunteering at the Senior Citizens Lunch

Adria: “I love volunteering for Manna and the Senior Citizens lunch was no exception. I assisted in assembling the table centre pieces and cooking in the kitchen, but the highlight of the event was interacting with the guests and watching their appreciation and gratitude of the day. Everyone had a fantastic day and a delicious lunch.”

Nazli:  “Serving these people and seeing the smile on their faces, gave me immense satisfaction, at the same time it was a change for me to get away from my routine job and indulge in something quite different.”

“Bankwest colleagues always come back humbled and grateful from their morning volunteering in the Manna Kitchen.   To be able spend a few hours away from work challenges and get back to the basics of making wholesome food for those in our communities who are doing it tough, gives them a much deeper appreciation of the true challenges that homeless people face, and of the organisations like Manna who support them.   “
